The Green Highlander, which began life as a fully dressed classic Atlantic Salmon Fly is now probably one of the best known Salmon flies in the world. It is exceedingly good in clear water, giving the best of its splendid colouring in these conditions.

The original of the species, almost, dressed on a tube! It is not very often that a fly appears on the scene which has such a dramatic effect on the minds of fisherman. All one has to do is read the angling report of any river throughout Ireland or Britain and it will be seen that this fly will feature more regularly than any other. Many say that it is because everybody fishes them, but that has also been the case for a very good reason, success ! Based on the colours of shrimps which were examined by Ally Gowans, this fly has a proven popularity on a world-wide basis, and justifiably so. Suited very well to fast and streamy water, due to its ability to maintain it's shape and a long and flowing tail, this fly has few equals. It has spawned many colour variants, including the Cascade, Yellow, Silver , Tumell and Special.

This is probably the most fished and successful of all of the Ally's Shrimp patterns over the past no. of years. It fishes consistently well in clear or coloured water, this fly has been the downfall of many fish. Its popularity probably originates in its ability to produce numbers of fish where other patterns have failed and its seemingly 'magnetic' attraction to even long time resident fish in a pool. It can be fished throughout the season with confidence and seems to have no preference of location or water type.
